Intelligent Interfaces
Special Interest Group (IISIG)
The Intelligent Interfaces Special Interest Group (IISIG) is sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) as part of its Intelligent Systems Integration Programme. The aims of the SIG are to;
- raise awareness of appropriate applications of II technology
- establish a community of II users and developers in order to foster and support research in the area
- establish connections with other DTI approved or funded groups in related areas
- to disseminate knowledge of good practice and experience throughout the industrial and academic communities.
The IISIG was formally constituted at its inaugural meeting which was held at the Open University on 30th March 1994. The executive committee is;
- David Benyon, Open University (Chair)
- Dimitris Bonis, Coventry University (Student Affairs)
- Christine Cheepen, Hertfordshire University (Publications)
- Jim Cunningham, Imperial College
- John Lee, Edinburgh University
- Martin Lefley, Bournemouth University
- James Monaghan, Hertfordshire University (Publications)
- Mike Revett, BT Labs
- Philip Rougier, TecTonic Systems
- Clive Warren, British Aerospace
- John Watkins, Admiral
Other members are to be co-opted onto the executive committee as required.
Intelligent Interfaces
The area of intelligent interfaces covers a variety of topics concerned with the application of artificial intelligence and knowledge-based techniques to issues of human-computer interaction. Intelligent Interfaces represent a major growth area for the application of knowledge-based techniques as many fundamental difficulties with human-computer interaction can only be solved with the II approach.
The IISIG adopts a practical orientation, investigating ways of integrating appropriate knowledge-based technologies into work situations. Applications of the concept and related issues include;
- Adaptive user interfaces
- Intelligent tutoring systems
- Customisable systems and interfaces
- Explanation systems
- Predictive interfaces
- Intelligent Help systems
- Tool-kits for intelligent interface production
- Critiquing systems
- Delivery platforms for intelligent interfaces
- Agent-based interaction
- Methodologies, techniques and strategies for II production and evaluation
- Communications, CSCW and intelligent interfaces
- Standardisation issues and metrics
- Intelligent multi-media systems (including virtual reality)
- Implementation techniques (including neural networks) Natural language, vision and other sensing systems
Activities
The main activities of the IISIG will be to raise awareness and disseminate information on the applications of II technology. Specifically the SIG will:
- 1. establish and maintain a database of IISIG members, their interests, current projects and uses of II technology. This database will be available for members to browse electronically
- 2. produce a regular newsletter IIQ ('Double IQ') informing members of relevant conferences, publications, demonstrations and related activities
- 3. organise and run regular conferences, seminars, workshops and visits on II applications and related issues.
Events
Seminars and Workshops
Seminars and Workshops:
- Agent-based interaction (Jim Cunningham)
- Past experience, future promise (Mike Revett) Autumn 1996
- The realities of Intelligent Interface technology (David Benyon) Spring 1997
- Intelligent Multi-media (John Lee) Summer 1995

Industrial visits
Visits are to be arranged to industrial sites where II technology can be seen in action
The IISIG intends to provide assistance with establishing II technology as a major part of the 4th European Framework and to establish a European network of excellence in the area.
